Spoon Aversion

Hazel ADORES graham crackers and milk. And she loves vegetables she can carry around with her and gnaw on, like celery and green peppers, although she isn't really able to eat those, just suck on them.
But she is adamantly against anything entering her mouth on a spoon. She started out okay with baby cereal. That only lasted about a week. She will not have anything to do with anything mushy, be it baby cereal, baby food, real human applesauce, even delicious small pear chunks if presented on a spoon. She only wants food she can pick up.

Most of the time, she gets a bottle, then I plop a spoonful of baby food on her high chair tray and put graham cracker pieces in the middle of the mush, so she has to get it on her fingers to pick up her cracker. That way she's at least exposed to the other flavors. But that's as good as I've been able to get it. At the end of the meal she looks like this:
but has not really eaten anything but the graham cracker.

What can I do to get my kid to eat real food? I don't care if she doesn't eat baby food, but I don't know what else to give her at this pre-chewing point. She likes pears, watermelon, and apples, but they all go flying out of her hand before she can get much in her mouth. Any ideas of good, grippable yet baby-mouth-mushy foods I can introduce her to?

Maybe ripe bananas? Or overcooked noodles? There is such thing as rice pasta too so you could try it with that, just overcook it so it mushes easy, but can be picked up. That might work in place of rice cereal. You may have to go to a whole foods store or look in the vegetarian section for that.

what about one of those grippable baby spoons with ridged edges that she can carry around with her and then stick in the mush herself? These pics are priceless by the way.

SHE'S SO ADORABLE, first of all.
Secondly, they have these little mesh bags type thingys with a little handle on them that you put whole food into and they chew on it and it automatically strains the food. So they are getting the food just not the big chunks. Gracie loved it and when whe was teething we'd put frozen fruits in them.
I'm pretty sure we just got them at TARGET.
p.s. Thanks so much for the phone call. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. It really meant so much to me though, so thanks again.
Love you!

We have a little mesh baggie attached thingie to a kid-sized handle. (I think we got it at Wal-mart) You can put pretty much anything in there: soft-cooked or fresh fruits and veggies, bread, etc. and then your little one can feed herself to her heart's content and you don't have to stress so much about choking.

Daniel LOVED it. In fact, he found it again when we pulled out the baby stuff and has been insisting that he eat an occasional snack with it.

Honestly, I wouldn't stress too much about the spoon aversion at this point.

Ha! I guess I should read the other comments before I comment myself. Sorry to be redundant.
